Every Drop Matters - Gacka river
Project description
UNDP RBEC and Coca Cola EMED established a Regional Partnership Project on Water Issues with the aim to provide the framework and a joint action plan for water-related programming in the countries of Europe and the CIS, with a particular focus on increased access to safe drinking water, facilitating the use of environmentally sound industrial technologies, and outreach and awareness raising activities to promote responsible water resource management. This Regional Public Private Sector Partnership Initiative is focused on countries including Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, (FYR of) Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan as well as Russia, Ukraine and Belarus that fall under the coverage area of UNDP-RBEC as well as Coca-Cola EMED.The Croatian component of the Regional Partnership Initiative is based on preservation of rivers as major sources of drinking water in Croatia, and promotion of their sustainable use as a source of economic opportunity for local population, particularly in the context of rural and adventure tourism. The river of Gacka was selected to be the focus of the first phase of project implementation. Within a partnership framework, local stakeholders are engaged to identify, prioritize, and contribute to the solution of the most pressing issues related to preservation of the river and its biodiversity. Transfer of know-how and facilitation of access to national-level resources is being provided by UNDP and TCCC. In collaboration with local stakeholders, the project targets the existing and potential entrepreneurs in the area of rural/adventure tourism, in order to enhance their capacities for offering higher-end products and services, in line with tenets of sustainable tourism and the requirements of its market. Branding of the river as the site of preserved natural and cultural heritage will be made instrumental in this respect. The purpose of the project is to develop a model for preservation of water through creation of economic incentives for its sustainable utilization by local population. The model is to be replicable in other locations, nationally and internationally. Project components The Project is being implemented by UNDP office in Zadar: |
