UNDP assistance to Croatia

UNDP assist Croatia in dealing with climate change issues primarily through activities aimed at the reduction of institutional barriers to the use of energy efficient technologies and procedures in residential and service sectors. This will aid in the implementation of the Kyoto protocol which Croatia has ratified in April 2007. Efforts towards the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity include promoting the development of the main economic sectors in the coastal area – tourism, agriculture and fisheries. The aim is to recognize, carefully use, promote and preserve rich biodiversity as the main developmental advantage in Dalmatia.

The Environmental Governance Programme aims to ensure that natural resources are used in a sustainable manner and in compliance with the international obligations and agreements that the Republic of Croatia has assumed. The programme aims at making a number of strategic contributions to the achievement of national Millenium Development Goal (nMDG) 7 - sustainable development - while seeking to achieve two outcomes related to climate change and biodiversity. The climate change outcome is a reduction of the institutional barriers that prevent the use of energy efficient technologies and practices in the residential and service sectors. UNDP-supported interventions contribute to National efforts to reach the Kyoto protocol targets for reducing greenhouse gasses. The biodiversity outcome intends to support greening and sustainable conservation actions and practices among the key sectors driving coastal and island development in Croatia. In 4 selected Dalmatian counties, UNDP works with operators in the tourism, agriculture and fisheries sectors to encourage investment decisions that are made on the basis of biodiversity protection and sound and sustainable environmental criteria.
